DisCos (Distribution Companies)

These are the private companies that operate within specific geographical areas and are responsible for distributing electricity to end-users. Examples include Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, Eko Electricity Distribution Plc, and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Plc.

GenCos (Generation Companies)

These companies are responsible for generating electricity. In Nigeria, both thermal (gas and coal) and hydro power plants contribute to the generation mix.

Load Shedding

This is a controlled and temporary reduction of electricity supply to manage demand, often due to constraints in the power grid.

Metering

This refers to the process of measuring electricity consumption, which can be done through prepaid or postpaid meters.

NERC (Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission)

The regulatory body responsible for overseeing and regulating the electricity sector in Nigeria.

Prepaid Meters

These are meters installed at homes, offices, or any domestic facility that require customers to purchase electricity units in advance, which are then loaded onto the meter. 

Substations

These are facilities that contain transformers and other equipment that step down the voltage of electricity for distribution to local areas.

Tamper Mode

This is a situation where the “meter cover” is open and unable to dispense power/supply/current to a customer's premise.

Tariff

The price per unit of electricity consumed is regulated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Token

This is a unique code after purchasing electricity units that is entered into the meter to activate the purchased units. 

Transformer

A device that changes the voltage of electricity.

Transmission

This refers to the process of transporting electricity from generation plants to distribution networks, often over long distances and using high voltage.

Vending

The sale of electricity units to customers, typically those with prepayment meters.
